[WKBC2025] World Korean Business Congress Unites Korean American Nurses

Atlanta Korean American Nurses Association volunteers to serve as medical interpreters

Korean American nurses in Atlanta are volunteering to provide medical interpretation services in advance of the World Korean Business Congress 2025 in Duluth, Georgia, starting April 17. The venue is the Gass South Convention Center. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the convention, the volunteer nurses will be on hand for any medical situations that may arise, along with emergency vehicles that will be on site. This medical interpreting service is organized by the Korean American Nurses Association of Atlanta (President Young Lee). The association organized a total of 10 volunteers for each schedule, divided into morning and afternoon. Most of the participants are professional nurses with hospital experience and can interpret as well as provide basic emergency response.

“In the event of a sudden pain or emergency, it can be dangerous to not be able to communicate,” said KNAAofGA President Imyoung Lee, who hopes the program will showcase the role nurses can play in the community. He hopes the association will become more than just a social organization, but a link to the community. The association has hosted health booths at the Southeast Games in the spring and the Korean Festival in the fall, and holds health seminars for Korean Americans two to three times a year on topics such as hypertension, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease. Ms. Lee entered the nursing program at Catholic University in 1988 and graduated in 1992.

After a career at Samsung Medical Center, she moved to the U.S. and worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Emory Hospital, where she now oversees and manages the center as the general manager of Sweeney Mishun Senior Living. His organization is actively promoting interaction not only with first-generation nurses but also with second- and 1.5-generation nurses. Discussions are also underway to introduce a scholarship program to train nurses. “We are the ones who can take care of people outside the hospital,” he says, ”and I hope that through this competition, more nurses will connect with the community.”
