Federation of Korean American Chambers of Commerce Holds General Convention, Expands Global Network Strategy

HOUSTON — The Federation of Korean American Chambers of Commerce (President Hwang Byung-gu, hereafter “the Federation”), a central organization representing Korean American business communities, held its annual general convention and workshop over two days from April 24 to 25, formally outlining strategies to enhance organizational operations and expand its global network.

At the 45th General Convention on Friday, April 24, the Federation approved accounting and audit reports, confirmed key appointments, and passed resolutions including the establishment of a fund for building a convention hall and the promotion of scholarship programs. These decisions further clarified the organization’s mid- to long-term strategic direction.

In his annual report, President Hwang highlighted expanded cooperation over the past year with the Korean government, local governments, and overseas Korean-related institutions. According to the report, the Federation strengthened policy coordination through ongoing consultations with organizations such as the Korea Federation of SMEs, the Overseas Koreans Agency, and local governments, while also expanding global market entry opportunities for Korean American businesses through exchanges with domestic and international economic groups and corporations.

The Federation is also accelerating efforts to build a U.S.-centered global business network while expanding exhibition and trade platforms. By promoting exhibitions that directly connect Korean small and medium-sized enterprises with local buyers in North America, the organization is focusing on generating tangible export results.

The financial report detailing expenditures of the Federation and its affiliated entities was approved without objection. However, due to the absence of appointed auditors in some divisions, the Federation plans to strengthen audit procedures and disclose results to its members. In personnel matters, appointments and nominations were made for key positions including vice presidents, senior vice presidents, vice chairpersons, and advisors. Commendations and appreciation plaques were also awarded to individuals and organizations, with chambers such as those in Orange County and Atlanta recognized for their contributions to hosting and operating the World Korean Business Convention.

The Federation also officially launched a committee to promote the construction of a convention hall and began fundraising efforts. In addition, it announced plans to actively pursue scholarship programs aimed at fostering the next generation of leaders, calling for active participation from its members.

“Amid global supply chain restructuring and rising protectionism, solidarity and cooperation among Korean American business leaders have become more important than ever,” President Hwang said. “We will focus on strengthening our organizational capabilities and building platforms that lead to tangible business outcomes.”

Korean American Business Leaders Gather in Houston, Signaling Expansion in Investment and Trade

At the convention and workshop, Korean American business leaders and U.S.-based institutions presented strong prospects for expanded investment and trade. Amid global supply chain shifts and protectionist trends, the Korean American business network is increasingly seen as a new growth engine.

Vivian Kwon, President of the Houston Korean American Chamber of Commerce and host of the event, emphasized that the gathering would strengthen cooperation and foster long-term partnerships among Korean American business leaders from across the United States. “Next-generation entrepreneurs and regional networks will serve as key drivers of growth,” she said.

The event also highlighted that trade volume between Houston and Korea has surpassed $21 billion. The Greater Houston Partnership noted that “Korea is one of the fastest-growing investment partners in Texas,” adding that cooperation continues to expand across energy, manufacturing, and advanced technology sectors.

Recent investment trends were also presented. A Hyundai-affiliated welding company has invested approximately $100 million, while another Korean firm is undertaking a project exceeding $200 million that is expected to create around 200 jobs. These developments illustrate a shift from simple trade to production-based investment.

Lee Kyung-eun, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Houston, noted in her congratulatory remarks, “For an organization to operate stably, it requires extensive internal discussions and coordination. Seeing this successfully achieved while advancing growth strategies demonstrates the Federation’s potential for sustainable development.”

She added, “For organizations with a long history, developing future strategies becomes even more challenging, but nurturing the next generation of business leaders will be the key competitive advantage for the Korean American economic community.”

From the Korean government side, Kim Kyung-hyup, Commissioner of the Overseas Koreans Agency, emphasized the strategic role of the Korean American business network. “For over 40 years, the Federation has played a pivotal role in expanding Korea–U.S. economic cooperation,” he said. “With the World Korean Business Convention transitioning to a private-sector-led model, its function as a global business platform will be further strengthened.”

He added that the platform will serve as a key bridge connecting overseas Korean businesses with Korean companies, helping them navigate global economic uncertainties, and expressed hope that fostering the next generation of business leaders and promoting mutually beneficial corporate cooperation would remain key priorities.

Participants at the event noted, “This is evolving beyond simple networking into a platform that leads to real investment and transactions,” describing it as a turning point in the emergence of a self-sustaining global business ecosystem for Korean American enterprises.
